特徴：完全選択制（「英語」は4区分18科目から選べます！）
[A] Issues in Society (IS)
Issues in Society (IS)は、ネイティブ英語教員が担当し、すべて英語によるレクチャー・ディスカッション形式の授業で、国際社会、地域社会における重要な課題や論点を深く掘り下げて学びます。知識・情報を英語で収集・理解できる力、自分の意見を発信・討論できる英語力を向上させ、社会の重要課題に向き合う姿勢と、批判的思考能力、問題解決能力を育みます。
５科目の中から好きな科目が選べます。複数のIS科目の履修も可能です。ただし、同一科目のクラスは１クラスしか履修できません。
TOEIC 500点以上の学生を想定していますが、意欲と関心がある学生は点数に関わらず受講可能です。

[B] Action in English (AE)
Action in English (AE) は、ネイティブ英語教員が担当し、すべて英語による少人数ゼミ形式の授業で、学生が興味のある分野・領域において、主体的に課題を見つけ、独自のプロジェクトを企画・立案し行動に移す実践型授業です。
５科目の中から好きな科目が選べます。複数のAE科目の履修も可能です。ただし、同一科目のクラスは１クラスしか履修できません。
TOEIC 500点以上の学生を想定していますが、意欲と関心がある学生は点数に関わらず受講可能です。

[C] Core Skills (CS)
Core Skills in English (CS) は、 (1)自己表現能（Presentation）、(2)（Writing）、(3)文法・語法の運用能力（Grammar and Usage）、(4)TOEICで結果を出せる英語力（TOEIC Preparation）、といった、目的ごとのスキルの向上に特化した授業です。
4科目が用意されています。複数のCS科目の履修も可能です。
• 2単位
• クラス定員：15-30人
- CS: Presentation
英語によるコミュニケーションの場（会話、ディスカッション、ディベート、プレゼンテーションなど）において、自分を表現するスキルの向上に焦点をあてます。さまざまな場面で英語で自己表現するのに必要・有益な語彙、表現、ストラテジーを実践を通して習得するとともに、その時点で持ちうる英語力を駆使して自信をもって堂々とコミュニケーションを図ろうという意識・姿勢を育みます。
- CS: Writing
英語の文章力と、さまざまな修辞スタイルやフォーマット（基本的な作文、リサーチライティング、クリエイティブライティングなど）で自分を表現する能力を磨くことに重点を置いています。自分の考えを自信を持って英語で書くために必要かつ有用な語彙、文法、慣習、ストラテジーを習得し、自分自身の声を育てることができます。
- CS: Grammar and Usage
英語の文法と語法に焦点を当て、特に日本人が理解しにくい部分や誤りやすい部分について、実際の使われ方や誤用例などの考察を通して、なぜそうなのかを考えながら、英語の仕組みや単語の使い方について理解を深める。単なる文法用語の知識ではなく、意図することを意図した語や文で表現できる実用的な能力の向上を目指す。
Grammar and Usageは入学時の英語力調査（TOEIC IP）の結果をもとに、習熟度別クラス編成となります。
- CS: TOEIC Preparation
TOEIC等の英語力試験で問われる能力の向上を図る授業です。単なる受験対策ではなく、日常生活、学校生活、ビジネスの世界、など実際のコミュニケーションシーンにおけるさまざま会話や議論、アナウンス、ナレーションなどを英語で聞き取る能力、ならびに、メモ、広告、E-mail,パンフレット、ビジネスレターなど、さまざまなジャンルの英文を正確に早く読む能力を養います。
TOEIC Preparationは入学時の英語力調査（TOEIC IP）の結果をもとに、習熟度別クラス編成となります。
[D] English through Media (EM)
English through Media (EM) は、ニュース、映画、本、雑誌、インターネットなどさまざまなメディアの中からもっとも興味のある媒体を通して、多量な英語をインプットし、意見交換することにより、大学生として必要な知識や教養を高めながら、総合的に英語力の向上をはかる授業です。
4科目が用意されています。複数のEM科目の履修も可能です。ただし、同一科目のクラスは１クラスしか履修できません。
クラスによっては、対象とする受講生のレベルの目安が提示されているものもありますので、シラバスで確認してください。

- EM: World News
ニュースや時事問題の英語を通して、私達の生きる世界の「今」を体感しながら、政治、社会、文化、科学、芸術など多様なテーマの英文に親しみ、総合的な英語力を高める。
- EM: Popular Culture
映画、ドラマ、音楽、アニメなどの諸文化を通して、英語という言語をこれまで以上に身近に感じながら、多様な英語表現に親しみ、総合的な英語力を高める。
- EM: Reading for Inspiration
インスピレーション（感動、創造的刺激）を得られる英文の読み物を通して、知的好奇心を満たしながら、多様な英語表現に親しみ、総合的な英語力を高める。
- EM: Online Articles and Videos
インターネット上のさまざまな記事や動画を通して、現在世界中で使用されている「生の英語」に触れながら、多様な英語表現に親しみ、総合的な英語力を高める。

Course Registration / 履修登録について
「英語」科目の履修登録(抽選)は学期ごとに行います。
各学期に登録できる英語科目の単位の上限は4単位です。（前期に英語の単位が0もしくは、1単位しか取れなかった場合は、後期には修得必要単位数（6単位）に必要な単位数までの履修を認めます。国際文化学科の学生は、1年前期、1年後期、2年前期の3学期とも、上限は4単位とし、2年後期以降には、修得必要単位数（12単位）に必要な単位数までの履修を認めます。抽選に外れ、4単位分の履修ができなかった学生は、教務企画室窓口で履修登録が可能です。詳細は「教養教育履修要項」で確認して下さい。
履修について
前期、後期に複数の英語科目を履修します。
授業は16週（2単位）、ただしIS科目は8週（前半か後半、1単位）です。

「英語」科目
English is currently the most powerful language as a means of connecting with people from diverse regions and cultures around the world. We are sure that you are well aware of the importance of acquiring practical communication skills, such as the ability to gather and share information, exchange opinions, and build consensus in English.
The English Program at Nagoya City University provides you with a place to actually do something with the English you have learned so far. What you want to do depends on your interests and needs. You may want to take a health lecture in English, use English to contribute to your community or interact with different cultures, make an original short film in English, give a presentation in English, improve your TOEIC score, listen to the news in English, enjoy a movie or anime in English, etc.
We offer 18 different English courses in 4 categories, so get a good understanding of the characteristics of each course by browsing the information on the website, syllabi, and in the course catalog. Then decide which courses to take based on your goals and interests and….

Introduction to English Courses
Feature: A completely elective system (You can choose "English" from 18 subjects in 4 categories!)
[A] Issues in Society (IS)
Issues in Society (IS) aims to enable students to delve into important issues and debates in international and local communities entirely in English through lectures and discussions taught by Native English-speaking faculty. Students improve their ability to collect and understand knowledge and information in English, and to communicate and discuss their own opinions in English, thereby fostering an attitude to face important issues in society, think critically, and solve problems.
Students can choose any of the five courses. It is possible to take more than one IS course, but students can only take one class in each subject.
Students are recommended to have a TOEIC score of 500 or higher, but students with motivation and interest can take the course regardless of their score.
- 8 weeks of classes (1 credit)
- Maximum class size: 25 students

In these courses, students consider community-related issues that affect them directly. - IS: Social Justice
In these courses, students consider social movements and social activism that lead to change and equality. - IS: Life & Work
In these courses, students consider topics and issues related to building and maintaining strong relationships and environments in their daily lives. - IS: Health & Well-being
In these courses, students consider issues related to maintaining health and well-being in their personal lives, communities, or around the world. - IS: The Arts
In this course, students consider issues related to art and culture as a reflection of society and as a tool for inspiring social action.
[B] Action in English (AE)
Action in English (AE) are seminar-style courses which aim to enable students to take initiative on identifying issues in their field or area of interest, plan and put into action their own projects in small-groups entirely in English using their skills and creativity.
Students can choose any of the five courses. It is possible to take more than one AE course, but students can only take one class in each subject.
Students are recommended to have a TOEIC score of 500 or higher, but students with motivation and interest can take the course regardless of their score.

- Maximum class size: 15 students
- AE: Make a Difference in Your Community: This course enables students to use English and engage in projects that explore local issues and contribute to the local community.
- AE: Interact Internationally
This course enables students use English to participate in international or cross-cultural exchange projects. - AE: Improve Life Skills
In these courses, students engage in projects in English that focus on personal development and skills to deal effectively with challenges and maintain a healthy body and mind.
- AE: Raise Health/Environmental Awareness
In this course, students use English and tackle real health and environmental issues in their community by working with local organizations and through social media. - AE: Produce a Movie
In this course, students create their own original short films in English to raise awareness, inspire action, or create change.
[C] Core Skills (CS)
Core Skills in English (CS) are language-based classes that focus on improving and polishing core English skills and is tailored to students' English target proficiency.
Four courses are available. Students may take more than one CS course.

- Maximum class size: 15-30 students
- CS: Presentation
This course, taught entirely in English, focus on developing the core skills students need in order to perform in a variety of oral communication settings (presentation, conversation, drama, discussion). These include verbal and nonverbal communication skills, as
well as presentation strategies. - CS: Writing
This course focuses on polishing students' writing skills and their ability to express themselves in English in a variety of rhetorical styles and formats (basic composition, research writing, creative writing, etc) based on their goals and interests.
- CS: Grammar and Usage
This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the English language system and word usage, especially in areas that Japanese English learners struggle with or are prone to make errors. The key goal is to improve students' practical ability to express their intentions with the intended words and sentences, rather than mere knowledge of grammatical terms.
Placement in the Grammar and Usage course is decided based on the student's TOEIC IP score at the time of enrollment.
- CS: TOEIC Preparation
This class is designed to improve the skills required for TOEIC and other English proficiency exams. This course is not just a test preparation course, but it is designed to develop the ability to listen to conversations, discussions, announcements, and narrations in English in real communication situations in daily life, school life, and the business world.
Placement in the TOEIC Preparation course is decided based on the student's TOEIC IP score at the time of enrollment.
[D] English through Media (EM)
English through Media (EM) courses aim to improve students' English comprehensively while gaining new knowledge and experience through discussion of various topics through the media of their choice, be it newspapers and magazines, internet sources, videos, or novels and short stories.
Four courses are available. Students may take more than one EM course, but not in the same subject area.
Some classes have recommended proficiency levels, so please check the course page and syllabus.

- Maximum class size: 20 students
- EM: World News
Through the use of news and current affairs in English, students will experience the "now" of the world in which we live, becoming familiar with English literature on diverse topics such as politics, society, culture, science, and the arts, while improving their comprehensive English skills.
- EM: Popular Culture
Through content from movies, drama, music, anime, and other cultural products from around the world, students will become more familiar with English commonly used in society, while encountering a variety of English expressions and improving their overall English language skills.
- EM: Reading for Inspiration
Through inspirational (moving, creatively stimulating) English readings, students will satisfy their intellectual curiosity while becoming familiar with a variety of English expressions and improving their overall English language skills.
- EM: Online Articles and Videos
These courses bring the Internet into the classroom as students share what they find online with their peers. This sharing will allow students the opportunity for lively conversations about relevant topics, to be exposed to English as it is currently used around the world, while encountering a variety of English expressions and improving their overall English skills.

Course Registration / 履修登録について
Registration (by lottery) for the "English" course is conducted every semester.
The maximum number of credits for English courses that can be registered each semester is 4 credits. (If a student earns zero or only one English credit in the first semester, he/she will be allowed to take up to the required number of English credits (6 credits) in the second semester. Students in the Department of Intercultural Studies are allowed to take up to 4 credits in the first semester of the first year, the second semester of the first year, and the first semester of the second year, and in the second semester of the second year and thereafter, they are allowed to take up to the required number of credits to meet the number of credits (12 credits). Students who were not selected in the lottery and could not take 4 credits can register at the Educational Affairs Planning Office. For details, please refer to the "Liberal Arts Course Guidelines.
