Key Words:
This course is comprised of three components designed to encourage students to read in English for interest, entertainment, and joy. The objective is to help students ‘study without studying’; that is, to gain the taste for reading to the point where they will learn more by absorption than by struggle. The first component is reading graded, classic novels. A main, graded text for the whole class, will be employed to draw the students in and hold their attention. The desire to keep reading is key. Subsequently, students will read a variety of graded readers, which they can choose for themselves, fairly freely, from stock at the university. The second component is travel-guidebook reading. Students will be asked to choose a country that they would like to visit and then procure at least one English language guidebook for that country, from which to plan a tour according to their own tastes. The final component is news-style reading online. Students may opt to print and read on paper if they prefer. A specialized website of graded news articles will be used with a wide range of topics that students are free to select from. These components will each include a variety of assessment methods, such as summaries, discussions, and presentations.
