Key Words:
As Japan increasingly discusses diversity, have you ever thought about what diversity really means? Due to the manipulation of media and news, many people either stigmatize or romanticize “diversity” without fully understanding or discussing it. This can lead to ignorance, discrimination, microaggressions, inequality, and social hierarchies. How can we better understand differences in society and promote equality?
This course explores how identity, language, culture, and social structures shape people’s experiences. Students will examine topics such as privilege, equality and equity, immigration, racism, gender expectations, and linguistic discrimination, while reflecting on how bias and microaggressions appear in everyday interactions. Through discussions and activities, students will practice expressing opinions, agreeing and disagreeing respectfully, and engaging in meaningful conversations in English. The course also incorporates art-based learning, encouraging students to reflect on course themes creatively through simple artistic projects and a final exhibition.
